Aiyo Kakis… this one really makes the heart pain.
We often go about our daily routines thinking that we have all the time in the world. We plan for the weekend, we worry about minor inconveniences, and we assume that tomorrow is a guarantee. But every once in a while, a story comes along that stops us in our tracks and reminds us just how fragile and unpredictable life truly is.
Grab a kopi O kosong, sit down, and let me tell you about Venecia Ng. It’s a story that has left many of us in shock, serving as a sobering reminder to cherish every single moment.

The Unpredictable Turn of Events
Venecia Ng was not just anyone. A 40-year-old former Singapore Airlines stewardess, she was the type of person who radiated warmth. After her time in the skies, she moved on to a role at Thomson Medical Centre, continuing to touch lives with her presence.
On a rainy day—the kind that makes us all a little more cautious—she was simply trying to cross the road to get to work. That’s when the unthinkable happened. She slipped on those familiar yellow tactile floor tiles. A fractured ankle was the result.
At the time, we might have thought, “Heng (luckily) it’s just an ankle, right?” It seemed like a minor setback in an otherwise busy life. She even went in for a standard surgery to fix it with screws, keeping her spirits up and joking about the situation on social media.
But two days later, the narrative shifted from a recovery story to a tragedy. While resting in the ward, she suddenly felt breathless and collapsed. Her heart stopped. Despite the heroic efforts of doctors who performed CPR for two hours and placed her on life support, Venecia never woke up. She passed away on July 9.
The Silent Danger: Pulmonary Thromboembolism
How does a simple ankle surgery turn fatal so quickly? It’s a terrifying reality known as Pulmonary Thromboembolism (PE).
Because Venecia was immobilized following her injury and subsequent surgery, blood clots began to form deep in her leg—a condition known as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). These clots, often silent and symptomless, can break free and travel through the bloodstream to the lungs, blocking vital blood flow.
It is a stark reminder that even during medical recovery, our bodies can be vulnerable to complications we might not even be aware of. It is a “hidden” risk that highlights the importance of movement, medical vigilance, and the unpredictable nature of our physical health.
A Life Well Lived
Beyond the medical tragedy, there is the person behind the headlines. To those who knew her, Venecia was an absolute “ball of sunshine.” She was described as deeply selfless, bubbly, and someone who always put others before herself.
The outpouring of grief at her wake—which was packed with friends, family, and former colleagues—speaks volumes. It was a testament to a life lived with kindness and a spirit that left a mark on everyone she met.
A Gentle Reminder
As we finish our kopi, let this story be a gentle prompt for all of us. Hug your loved ones a little tighter today. Don’t sweat the small stuff, because the small stuff is truly insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
Venecia’s journey reminds us that while we cannot control the unpredictability of life, we can control how we show up for one another while we are here.
Rest in peace, sister. You were a light that will be missed, but never forgotten.
If you’ve ever had to deal with an unexpected health scare, how has it changed the way you view your day-to-day life?
