• Mr. K. Shanmugam’s property dealings, which were referenced alongside an $88 million valuation.
• Dr. Tan See Leng’s acquisition of a property valued at $27.3 million.

On the surface, these are just property transactions. However, the High Court found that the way Bloomberg framed these dealings was the real problem. The court determined that the article’s narrative went beyond mere reporting—it carried strong implications that these two ministers were essentially “secret agents” of sorts, strategically bypassing money laundering checks and engaging in conduct that suggested shady business.

The Verdict: A Costly Lesson in Journalism

Update (July 26): Pay Up, Diam-Diam, and Run Away!

Just when you thought the drama couldn’t get any spicier, the court came back at the end of July to hit Bloomberg with the ultimate bill! On top of the $460,000 in total damages ($230k to Shanmugam and $230k to Tan See Leng), the High Court ordered Bloomberg and reporter Low De Wei to pay another $290,000 in legal costs ($145,000 to each minister).

So altogether, Bloomberg had to cough up almost three-quarters of a million dollars! Even after bleeding all that cash, Bloomberg’s management still tried to flex, publicly insisting that their reporting was “solid and 100% accurate.”

Update (Aug 26): Bloomberg Not Appealing The Sentence

But talk is cheap, because when the deadline to file an appeal rolled around on August 27, 2026, Bloomberg completely ghosted the court—zero appeal filed! Seeing them quietly swallow the judgment, Shanmugam went on Facebook to call them out, basically saying: “You talk so big in public say your story accurate, but when time come to back it up in court, you diam-diam surrender?”

He pointed out that by refusing to appeal both the original POFMA order and this court ruling, Bloomberg effectively admitted their story was indefensible. In the end, no matter how big-shot an international media outlet thinks it is, you cannot just publish fake news in Singapore and expect to walk away untouched—case closed, bill settled, and now time for another cup of Teh C!
