Wah Lao Eh, COE Hit 129k: Might as Well Buy a Helicopter?

Wah lao eh, I tell you, now want to buy car in Singapore really can jiak sai already! Today coffee shop talking point definitely this one. If you thought your regular cai png auntie charging you $2 for fish was a robbery, wait till you see the latest LTA bidding results.

The small car COE (Cat A) just hit a crazy, heart-attack-inducing record of $129,000. Break history man!

But wait, the joke gets better. The big car COE (Cat B) is sitting at almost $131,000. Do the math, my friends. The gap between a humble, everyday family hatchback and a luxury, high-SES Mercedes is now just the price of a couple of nice dinners. At this rate, buying a Kia is basically a stealth wealth flex.

And don’t even think you can escape by changing industry or cutting down on wheels:

  • Van and lorry COE (Cat C): Hit $95,000. Uncle wants to deliver your GrabFood or furniture also need to take bank loan first.
  • Motorbike COE (Cat D): Passed $10,000 again. Now even riding a phantom to look cool costs the price of a second-hand Rolex.

Two wheels, four wheels, or commercial wheels—all also cut throat! At this point, the only thing we can afford to drive is our own sanity off a cliff.

Why Suddenly So Jialat?

Everyone at the coffee shop was scratching their heads. Did we discover oil under Jurong East? No. It’s a perfect storm of FOMO and strategy:

  1. The “Three-Week” Trap: This round had a three-week gap instead of the usual two. That gave those smooth-talking car sales executives one extra week to psycho uncles, aunties, and young couples. “Brother, buy now, next week increase!” Well, they weren’t lying.
  2. The EV Invasion: Those new Chinese Electric Vehicle brands are fighting like crazy on our roads. It’s like a real-life Transformers movie out there, but instead of saving the world, they are destroying our bank accounts.
  3. The 2027 Government Subsidy Deadline: Everyone is rushing to buy EVs because the government subsidy is going to slash $10,000 by 2027. So, ironic right? People are willingly spending $129k on a piece of paper just to “save” $10k. Singaporean logic at its absolute finest.

LTA Say Relax, Car Bosses Say No Hope

LTA came out to play the peacekeeper, telling everyone to please relax, calm down, and bid carefully.

Translation: “Eh, don’t kancheong, you all bidding like it’s a Taylor Swift concert ticket.”

But the car dealership bosses just laughed and said, “No hope, price won’t drop.” Why? Because too many desperate buyers lost this round. They are now angry, sleep-deprived, and armed with bags of cash, waiting to kung-fu fight again next round.

The Ultimate Kopi Kaki Conclusion

Don’t look at cars already. Seriously. Close your Carousell tabs. Stop walking past the showrooms just to smell the leather.

Save your money, order an extra soft-boiled egg with your kopi, and go proudly tap your EZ-Link (or SimplyGo, whatever) card. Look at the bright side: at least the MRT got aircon, you can play Mobile Legends without crashing into a tree, and it doesn’t cost $129,000 just to sit down!

Who’s walking to the bus stop with me tomorrow? First round of kopi on me!
