Escape to JB: The Ultimate 3-Day, 1-Night “Jailbreak” Vacation Guide by Lim Tean!

Come kaki, help me order one Kopi-O Gao with extra sugar! You won’t believe the absolute cinema happening at the Causeway right now. Grab a seat, because today’s story is better than any Channel 8 9pm drama.

Who is Lim Tean Anyway?

For those who don’t follow local politics: Lim Tean is a high-profile lawyer and veteran opposition politician. He used to head the National Solidarity Party (NSP) before leaving to form his own party, Peoples Voice (PV)—you know, the ones famous for shouting “Make Singaporeans Proud Again!” and promising to give everyone free money. More recently, he co-founded the political alliance People’s Alliance for Reform (PAR).

His Greatest Hits (Headline Edition)

Before this JB stunt, brother was already a constant regular on news feeds for all kinds of wild legal battles:
* The High-Profile Defamation Case: He represented blogger Leong Sze Hian when PM Lee Hsien Loong sued him for defamation.
* The “Lawyer Without License” Saga: He went to court and filed documents 32 separate times in 2021 without actually having a valid practicing certificate for that period. That’s the exact case that got him this 3-month and 1-week jail sentence!
* The $30,000 Cheque Mishap: The Law Society tried to get him struck off after he mishandled a client’s $30,000 payout cheque. The court ended up slapping him with a $30,000 fine instead, citing his “cavalier attitude.”
* Stalking & Breach of Trust Charges: Over the years, he’s also faced charges alleging criminal breach of trust regarding client funds and unlawful stalking of a former employee.

Basically, if there’s a courtroom drama in SG, there’s a 50% chance Lim Tean is somewhere in the building!

The JB Escape Plan

Back to the main event! The court politely invited Lim Tean to report himself on August 3 to finally start his jail sentence for practicing without a license. He had already gotten one extension from July to August—very generous, like asking for a late check-out at a hotel.

He was supposed to hand himself over at 12pm sharp. But when the clock struck noon? Poof! Ghost mode activated!

Suddenly, his lawyer couldn’t reach him. His bailor couldn’t find him. Phone ringing straight to voicemail. Everyone in Singapore was staring at their screens asking: “Wah, brother go where already?”

Turns out, uncle had a masterplan. Why face the music when you can take a spontaneous getaway? Brother packed his bags, crossed the Causeway, and checked into a short-term Airbnb-style apartment complex in Johor Bahru! Maybe he thought if he chilled long enough in JB, drank enough Teh Tarik, and ate enough late-night lok lok, the Singapore court would forget about him. Or maybe he thought the Causeway jam would slow down the police forever.

Unfortunately for him, the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) don’t play play. On August 6, while he was probably living his best staycation life, the Malaysian police knocked on his door and officially ended his JB holiday early. No second extension, no late checkout, and definitely no refund!

Now, the Singapore Police Force is giving big thumbs up and terima kasih to the Malaysian authorities while preparing a prompt, non-negotiable one-way ticket to escort him straight back to SG.

The Moral of the Story?
You can escape the Tuas checkpoint jam, and you can escape paying full price for seafood, but you definitely cannot escape the law! Next time you want to go JB for an impromptu getaway, just make sure you don’t have an active arrest warrant waiting for you back home, okay?

Anyway, back to my kopi. What a show!
