The rationale? Singapore is squeezed for space, and we urgently need footprint for clean energy infrastructure, hydrogen power facilities, advanced chemical manufacturing, and military defense. Sounds like a textbook gahmen masterplan to future-proof our economy, right?
But under the surface, local marine scientists, environmental advocates, and diving enthusiasts are practically choking on their teh halia. Why? Because directly beneath those proposed reclamation boundaries lies Singapore’s oldest, most OG underwater ecosystem: our 8,000-year-old coral reefs.
The Kopitiam Breakdown: What’s the Big Deal?
To put 8,000 years into proper perspective: when these corals first started forming around Hantu and Semakau, woolly mammoths were still roaming the Earth, the Egyptian pyramids were thousands of years away from being built, and Singapore was nothing more than an untouched cluster of swamp and sea.
Leading experts, including NUS Marine Science Director Prof Huang Danwei, were quick to ring the alarm bells. They pointed out that these southern waters aren’t just a few isolated rocks with sea anemones stuck on them. They form an interconnected marine sanctuary made up of hard and soft coral reefs, lush seagrass meadows, and fringing mangrove systems that took millennia to establish.
When well-meaning bystanders suggest, “Alamak, just dig up the corals and transplant them somewhere else, can or not?”, scientists break out in a cold sweat.

- Natural Coastal Protection: Healthy coral reefs are Singapore’s natural breakwaters. They absorb up to 97% of offshore wave energy, preventing ocean currents from washing away our coastlines. Without these natural barriers, we’ll have to spend billions in public funds building ugly, artificial concrete seawalls that require constant maintenance.

- Untapped Biomedical & Materials Science: Ancient coral ecosystems harbor complex chemical compounds produced by sponges, sea squirts, and micro-organisms. Destroying them means wiping out potential future discoveries in medicine, pharmacology, and bio-engineering before our researchers even get the chance to study them.
What Happens Now?
In response to public feedback and expert reactions, representatives from the Ministry of National Development (MND) have reassured the public that the Western Islands reclamation is currently in its early conceptual and feasibility phase.
MND has promised that comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), hydrodynamic modeling, and technical studies will be carried out.
Crucially, the government has committed to engaging nature groups, marine scientists, and community stakeholders to explore alternative engineering methods—such as pile-supported platforms, floating infrastructure, or adjusted reclamation footprints—before any final decisions are locked in.
Economic growth and clean energy transitions are essential for Singapore’s survival in the next 50 years—nobody is denying that.
