Football Bets, Stolen Cash & Imaginary Robbers: The Bishan Drama That Ended in Changi Prison

Wah kakis, if you ever feel like you’ve made bad choices in life, take a deep breath and read this story. One local guy managed to turn a lost football bet into a full-blown crime saga involving stolen money, an Oscar-worthy lie to the police, and a breakup—all to end up with a 19-week stay at Changi Prison.

Here is the unbelievable breakdown of 34-year-old Reynold and his catastrophic attempt at covering up a S$9,000 gambling loss.

Act I: The Gambling Loss & The Wardrobe Raid

It all started when Reynold decided to try his luck with football betting. Unfortunately for him, the football gods were not on his side, and he managed to lose an eye-watering S$9,000.

To make matters worse, he had hired part-time movers to help him move, and suddenly realized he didn’t even have enough cash left to pay them. Now, a normal adult would admit they messed up, borrow money legitimately, or work out a payment plan.

Reynold, however, decided to treat his 31-year-old live-in girlfriend’s unlocked wardrobe like a video game side quest. He casually raided her bags and swiped S$6,200 in cash straight out of her handbags to cover his expenses.

Act II: The S$11,000 “Bank Deposit” Masterplan

Knowing his girlfriend would eventually notice thousands of dollars missing from her bags, Reynold needed a cover story. And what a cover story he concocted.

He hatched a plan to tell her: “Eh darling, I actually took your money to deposit it into the bank for you, but unfortunately, I got robbed on the way!”

To make his story look 100% authentic, he took his lie straight to the authorities. Standing along Bishan Street 11, he dialed 999 and reported that two mysterious men had snatched S$11,000 in cold hard cash right out of his hands.

Because, obviously, the most believable scenario in safe-and-secure Singapore is standing along a public road in Bishan casually holding $11,000 cash in open air!

Act III: An Oscar-Worthy Performance for 20 Cops

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) takes reports of violent crimes very seriously. Unaware that they were dealing with an aspiring fiction writer, the SPF deployed a massive army of 20 police officers to the scene in Bishan.

Instead of panicking and coming clean when two dozen cops showed up, Reynold doubled down on his script:
* Detailed Descriptions: He gave officers full physical descriptions and outfit details of his imaginary robbers.
* Invented Characters: He even invented a fictitious female witness to make his robbery story sound even more convincing!

For nearly three full hours, officers sweated under the sun, searching the neighborhood, checking CCTV footage, and hunting for two phantom thieves who didn’t exist.

Act IV: The Polygraph Truth Bomb & The Aftermath

You can write a convincing script, but you can’t fool police investigations for long. Months after the incident, as investigators probed deeper into the inconsistencies of his story, Reynold was subjected to a lie detector test (polygraph).

Faced with the polygraph test, his elaborate web of lies completely collapsed, and he finally confessed that the whole robbery was fabricated from thin air.

The fallout was swift and brutal:
1. The Financial Loss: He only managed to return S$3,000 of the stolen S$6,200 to his girlfriend.
2. The Relationship: Unsurprisingly, he lost his girlfriend.
3. The Legal Sentence: For stealing from his partner and giving false information to public servants, he traded his flat for a 19-week sentence in Changi Prison.

The Kopitiam Scorecard

  • Storytelling & Imagination: 9/10 (Points for detail, zero for realism)
  • Financial IQ: -100/10 (Lost $9k on bets, stole $6.2k, paid back $3k, went to jail)
  • Common Sense: 0/10 (Calling 20 cops to investigate an imaginary crime in Singapore)

Moral of the Story: When you lose a bet, take the L like an adult. Trying to cover up a mistake by stealing from your partner and wasting 20 police officers’ time won’t save your bank account—it will only get you single, broke, and behind bars!
