Wah, siah suay. You know those company dinners where everyone thinks they’re just having a good time, knocking back a few glasses of wine and beer, letting loose after a long week? Well, one recent court case is giving everyone a massive reminder that when the alcohol flows too much and people blur their lines, things can turn catastrophic.

Grab your kopi, settle into your kopitiam chair, and let’s talk about why this is one story that leaves a very bitter taste in the mouth.
The Setup: Too Much Kopi… Err, Wine and Beer
Picture the scene back in January 2023 at an office space hosting an interior design company dinner. The guest list featured staff members, suppliers, subcontractors, and even the guy maintaining the air-conditioning units—a 37-year-old Malaysian named Beh Kien Tai.
Also invited to the table was a 39-year-old Singaporean project manager. Why was she there? She had previously worked as a freelance sales associate for the firm and remained good friends with the company’s owner, known in court papers as C1.
Sounds like a standard corporate gathering, right? Except the drinks were flowing a bit too freely. Both Beh and the project manager ended up completely intoxicated after consuming beer and wine.
By past midnight, the lady was so sloshed she couldn’t even make it home. Her ex-boss (C1) and some other women kindly set her up with a blanket and a pillow on the first-floor office floor to sleep it off.

The party wrapped up around 1:30 am, and most people cleared out. But Beh? He rejected an offer to be taken home, saying he wanted to rest there for a while before driving himself, and headed up to the loft to crash.
The Crime: Total Blur Sotong Behaviour
Now, this is where the story takes a dark, ugly turn.
At about 3:00 am, Beh woke up and walked down to the office space where the victim was sleeping on the floor, fully aware that she was intoxicated. He literally stepped right over her to access a washroom adjacent to the office space.
Instead of just doing his business and heading home like a decent human being, he approached the victim after using the washroom and lay down with her on the floor. At about 3:03 am, he removed the victim’s clothing and his own clothes, proceeding to molest and rape her. Between 3:21 am to 3:22 am, he placed the victim’s pants back on. At about 3:30 am, Beh re-entered the office space, retrieved his pants and put them on before leaving the room, finally walking out of the office at about 3:38 am.
The Catch: CCTV Don’t Lie
When the victim woke up at about 3:48 am, 3:50 am, and 3:54 am, she made multiple attempts to call from the office landline as she felt completely confused, fearful, and lost. At about 5:00 am, she sent a text to C1 saying that someone had “f*cked” her. She eventually left the office at about 6:08 am.
At about 7:00 am, C1 read the text message and retrieved surveillance footage from the office space. After seeing what had taken place, she sent the victim screenshots of the footage, and the victim proceeded to lodge a police report. Promptly after, on Jan 15 at about 2:45 am, Beh was arrested and remanded.
The Kopi Takeaway: Justice Kena Served
Fast forward to the judgment day, and the court didn’t hold back. The prosecution sought a sentence of 11 years and three months to 11 years and nine months of jail, alongside nine strokes of the cane. They argued that the victim was vulnerable and that Beh exposed her to the risk of pregnancy and contracting sexually transmitted diseases. Furthermore, the prosecution cited that the incident affected the victim emotionally and “practically”—noting that in addition to feeling lost, confused, and fearful, her work (which involved travel) was also heavily impacted.
(For context, committing rape carries a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in jail along with fines or caning, while molestation carries up to three years in jail, fines, caning, or any combination of these).
The final verdict landed squarely on 11 and a half years behind bars, plus 9 strokes of the cane.
Look, kakis, here at our kopitiam table, we love a good laugh, good vibes, and sharing lighthearted stories. But some things are no joke. Being drunk is never an excuse to lose your morals, violate someone’s safety, or act like an absolute animal.
Let this be a stern reminder to everyone: keep your drinks in check, respect boundaries, and always look out for your kakis instead of preying on them.
Aiyo, think with your brain, not with the wrong place. Now enjoy your prison porridge, steady anot? 🛑⚖️
