Wah lao, this one is a real horror story for our local F&B operators. Just when you think things are finally stabilizing, the rental monster strikes again.
If you think running a hawker stall is easy money, this tragic news from Eunos will make you think twice. Seven innocent stall vendors are getting evicted at the end of July 2026, and some of them are burning serious cash.
The Hot Spot: Thye Hwa Heng Canteen
The drama is unfolding at Thye Hwa Heng Canteen, a well-known industrial coffee shop located at Block 29 Eunos Avenue 6. Out of nowhere on Father’s Day (June 21), all the stall vendors received a sudden notice saying they must pack up and vacate by the end of July.
The 67-year-old big boss of the canteen, Uncle Chen Qiwen, is shutting down the whole place after running it for 40 long years.
The Biggest Victim: DUDU Cantonese Cuisine ($100k Gone!)
The absolute unluckiest party in this whole saga has to be DUDU Cantonese Cuisine (嘟嘟粤菜), run by a young 29-year-old boss, Tommy Pang.
Look at how jialat his situation is:
- Fresh Move-In: Tommy just moved his viral Cantonese restaurant into this canteen six months ago back in November 2025.
- Huge Capital: He invested over $100,000 of hard cash to set up the place.
- The Contract: He signed a rental agreement all the way until 2028, renting three adjoining stalls for a whopping $10,000 a month.
- The Giant Fan: Because he wanted his customers to eat comfortably, he even spent an extra $10,000 just to install one massive industrial ceiling fan!
DUDU just started gaining traction, pulling in 450 to 500 happy diners every single evening with viral dishes like their signature Crispy Orh Luak. Now, his plans are completely cut short. He is literally burning cash, and his 17 staff members are all stressed out about becoming jobless overnight.

Another “Suay” Vendor: The $18k Expansion Trap
Tommy isn’t the only one crying. Another auntie vendor in the canteen is also facing a nightmare. Just half a year ago, she shelled out $18,000 to buy over the stall next door just to expand her business. Now, before she can even earn back her capital, she has to leave. She mentioned that if she cannot find a suitable new location at short notice, she might as well just retire.
Why is the Canteen Closing Down?
Before you go and blame the 67-year-old canteen operator, his side of the story is also bo pian (helpless).
Uncle Chen explained that over the last two years, nearby factories have been shifting out of the Eunos industrial area, causing his customer foot traffic to plummet by half. On top of that, the landlord informed him that the master rent was going up.
Uncle Chen’s Dilemma: “I’m getting older. If I sign a new contract with higher rent and no customers, I am terrified I will lose all my life’s savings.”
Can you blame him? At 67, it’s better to protect your retirement fund than to gamble it all on crazy rental hikes.
The Last Day: Go Support Them!
This is a stark reminder of how brutal the Singapore F&B landscape can be. If you want to show some solidarity and give these vendors a proper send-off, their official last day of operations is July 26, 2026.
Head down to Block 29 Eunos Ave 6, grab some comforting Cantonese food, and enjoy the breeze under that $10,000 giant fan one last time before it stops spinning forever!
