Wah kakis, quickly go order your Kopi-O Gao and Cya Tow Kway, sit down, and listen properly. If you think Channel 8’s 9 PM drama serials are getting boring, this real-life Singaporean uncle just produced, directed, and starred in a plot so wild it makes Holland V look like an educational documentary.
Recently, news broke about a 57-year-old local uncle—Kong Jun Yi Jonathan—who got handed a 3-year and 7-month jail sentence. On paper, it sounds like your usual court crime report. But once you dig into the details? Gao, gao, swee, swee—this one is absolute legend-status wayang.

Phase 1: The “Widowed Marine Engineer” Persona
It all began back in October 2020. Our hero, Uncle Jonathan, joined a dating app like any modern single looking for love. He met a 54-year-old auntie and immediately hit her with a blockbuster background story:
1. His job: High-flying, action-packed “Marine Engineer.”
2. His relationship status: A tragic, lonely widower whose beloved wife had passed away.
Plot Twist #1: In reality, Jonathan was a humble fruit vendor. His wife was very much alive, kicking, and living at home with their kid! Imagine coming home from selling papayas, sitting down at the dinner table with your live wife, and casually texting your new girlfriend, “Ah Girl, I miss my late wife today…” The level of composure here is top-tier.
Phase 2: The Multi-Million-Dollar “Excuses” Portfolio
Once the romance was sealed, Uncle Jonathan didn’t just ask for $50 for a kopi or $100 for a transport pass. No lah, he aimed for the moon. Between 2021 and 2022, he systematically tapped his new lover like an ATM machine using a series of creative business “pitches”:
- The Filial Son Angle: “My mother got bank debt as a guarantor, need urgent help!” $250,000
- The Cultural Visionary: “I starting an art business with MCYS!” $250,000
- The Contractor: “Secured a massive HDB painting project!” $100,000
- The Maritime Specialist: “Doing top-secret government ship repairs!” $164,193.58
- The Welfare Case: “My company hold back my salary, no money for daily expenses…” $105,940
Total cash transferred? Over $870,000.
Now, you must be thinking: Where did all the government ship repair and MCYS art project money go? Did he invest in crypto? Did he go to Marina Bay Sands?
Nope. Court documents revealed he used the money to buy wholesale fruit from suppliers! Literally using nearly a million dollars of love-scam money to fund apples, oranges, and durians.
Phase 3: Pawnshops, Photoshop, and Gold Swiping
As if nearly $900k in cold hard cash wasn’t enough, Uncle Jonathan decided to turn his lover’s house into his personal pawn shop supplier.
In 2021, he quietly swiped 45 pieces of gold jewellery (worth around $52,500) belonging to his girlfriend and her 59-year-old sister—we’re talking gold bracelets, necklaces, and pendants. He also helped himself to a $15,000 Rolex watch. Where did it all go? Straight to local pawnshops so he could cash out for “household expenses.”
To keep the illusion going when the auntie started asking questions about his “booming art business,” Uncle Jonathan flexed his tech skills. He pulled out a phone photo-editing app, edited a $600,000 bank cheque to put his own name as the payee, and showed it to her to say, “See! Big money coming in soon!” On top of that, he forged a fake Mount Elizabeth Hospital medical memo and a fake NRIC!
Phase 4: The K-Drama Ending
By the time the law caught up with him in January 2026, he had swiped over $930,000 in cash and valuables.
Then came Plot Twist #2, straight out of a Korean drama:
Uncle Jonathan sold his own house to repay $158,000 back to the victim. And believe it or not, the victim actually FORGAVE him and begged the judge to give him a light sentence! Talk about deep love.
However, the judge was not watching a romance drama. Facing 11 charges (including theft, deception, and forgery), Uncle Jonathan pleaded guilty to four, and was promptly sentenced to 3 years and 7 months behind bars.
The Kopi-Shop Takeaway
So, what have we learned today, uncle and aunties?
If you meet someone on a dating app who claims to be a marine engineer, government painter, art mogul, and tragic widower all at once… but they constantly smell like durian and mangosteen, DO NOT give them your savings. Steady bit, run for your life!
